Bradford Woods– A Unique Experience!

SMART CEU’s Hub is excited to explore the beautiful grounds and facilities of Bradford Woods during the upcoming SMART CE Retreat on May 12th- 15th. There is a long history of growth, adventure and fun at this location.

The Recreation Therapy department at Indiana University has been providing life-changing experiences to youth and adults with physical and cognitive diagnoses for more than 65 years. Their passionate staff members use a uniquely accessible facility to empower each camper through therapeutic activities like archery, arts and crafts, basketball, canoeing, music, scuba diving, swimming, waterskiing, and low- and high-ropes courses, while focusing on building confidence, breaking barriers, and creating life-long friendships.

Camp Riley empowers children with physical and cognitive diagnoses by providing life-changing experiences in a camp environment tailored to their individual needs. Campers shatter perceived limitations, make new friends, and reach higher achievements, returning home with an increased sense of independence and confidence. Camp Riley serves over 320 campers each year in a barrier-free site. There are 8 unique sessions of camp.
This year the camp is excited to offer a session “Beyond the Woods” for Camp About Face Campers. Campers are matched with adult mentors who have been through similar life experiences and can act as a source of empowerment and resource for campers on a variety of topics, including personal challenges, next steps in education, career and more.
SMART CEU’s Hub is proud to be supporting Bradford Woods and the many programs they offer. We look forward to creating our own fun memories at the SMART CE Retreat! Hope to see you there!

INNOVATION FROM A TOY: Hand Solo–From Play to Function

Born without a right forearm due to the congenital disease Poland Syndrome, David Aguilar grew up knowing what it was like to be different. He faced challenges both physically and emotionally, but he was not deterred from his dreams. From a young age he began creating prosthetic arms from something he had readily available, Legos. In 2017, he was awarded a Guinness World Record for building the first functional prosthetic arm with Legos. His Lego arms have advanced over the years and he has now incorporated motors and sensors. David is a bio-engineering student who wants to make prosthetic arms affordable and accessible world wide. Prosthetics can cost anywhere from $5,000- $50,000 and need to be repaired and replaced often. By using affordable Lego parts, David hopes to help people around the world feel more independent regardless of their income. He recently built two prosthetic arms for an 8 year old boy named Beknur, who doesn’t have developed limbs. David was able to build both arms for a cost of about $18. “With Beknur’s case, I felt an immense joy and happiness when I saw him moving the LEGO prosthetic for the first time. He was smiling so hard it was contagious! I feel like if I’m lucky enough to keep building these prosthetic, I can help more children and people around the world.”

David is nicknamed Hand Solo because he loves fantasy films and relates to the characters ingenuity and perseverance. He believes that toys promote creativity and helped him innovate. David is sharing his expertise in an upcoming documentary entitled MR. HAND SOLO, and in free instructional videos on his YouTube channel, Hand Solo
